What is sustainable development?
Sustainable development is “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
What’s happening in Government?
In January 2003, the Government released its Programme of Action for Sustainable Development in New Zealand. It puts forward a number of projects and initiatives that the Government considers important as a first step in its contribution to sustainable development. The programme of action focuses on water quality and allocation, energy, sustainable cities, and child and youth development.
What’s the role of research, science and technology in sustainable development?
The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology is currently reviewing its funding of sustainability research. The review is to identify the:
- directions in which sustainability research needs to advance
- types of research needed to move in the new directions
- desirable characteristics of future research investments.
