Car crime impacts as a barrier to recreation and tourism participation. (Department of Conservation)
What is the extent and impact of theft from cars associated with recreation and tourism attractions, and what are the best means to reduce those impacts?

Economic Impacts of Immigration (Department of Labour)
A study to develop an understanding of the wider impacts and benefits immigration has for New Zealand’s economy. The primary focus is on the overall economic impact of immigration, with specific focus on ramifications for areas such as the labour market, productivity and technological change, trade, and fiscal outcomes.

Project Pipeline: Justice Sector Modelling and Forecasting (Ministry of Justice)
Currently, forecasting and modelling activities in the justice sector are conducted by isolated units across a number of different agencies. This results in forecasts that are inconsistent between agencies, forecasts that do not take into account the impact of policy changes on other agencies and forecasts that are generally not shared.
Pipeline is a project that is intended to address this problem. It is the basis for a more sophisticated, systematic and cross-sectoral approach to justice sector modelling, which will have benefits for policy development, planning, management, and resource allocation within the justice sector.
Other Departments/Agencies involved: Police, Department of Corrections, CYFS, The Treasury, Crown Law, Legal Services, State Services Commission.
Developing capacity to analyse biosecurity impacts on native flora of biological and/or cultural value (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries)
It is vital to protect the health of New Zealand's biodiversity by the effective exclusion of exotic pests and diseases. Many indigenous genera of flora are important in the landscape and in biological communities, and/or are of particular cultural significance to Maori. Predicting impacts of new pests on these biological systems and on the values that communities place upon them is an area in need of further information and methodologies. Along with a technical understanding of potential impacts, we also need to be able to work effectively with stakeholders to identify significant values and set appropriate protection measures to minimise impacts on these values.

Bridging the gap between environmental knowledge and research, and desired environmental outcomes to achieve sustainable land management (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries)
The project will identify:
-
successful and enduring approaches for bridging the gap and increasing the flows between the knowledge from environmental research, and environmental outcomes on the ground, based on case studies in specific areas;
-
the key characteristics of these successful approaches;
-
methods for ensuring that these key characteristics can be replicated and applied across a range of agencies and can cover the spectrum of environmental areas.
Other Departments/Agencies involved: Department of Conservation, Ministry of Research, Science and Technology
Marine Invaders Spatial Prediction model (MISPM) – a spatial model for assessing NZ Marine biosecurity risks (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries)
This project will develop a multi disciplinary decision support tool that identifies spatially explicit risks to the components of the fundamental core values (biotic, economic, social and spiritual) in the marine environment and evaluates the risks to these values. This requires the identification of components of the core values, developing a methodology of valuation for non-market values ($ values versus self-referential quantitative scores following a delphic model), and identifying the social science of spiritual and social valuation, taking into account proximity and social (gender, racial, urban/rural) biases. The project will consist of the collation and collection of a wide array of information sets and the development of models to determine 1) the spatial distribution of real and perceived core values in New Zealand’s near shore environment; 2) the likely distribution of hazard species in New Zealand; and 3) the likely impacts of hazard species to these core values.
Other Departments/Agencies involved: Department of Conversation, Maritime Safety Authority, Ministry of Fisheries.
Ageing in Place: relationships between older people, working age people, communities and ‘ageing in place’ – a study of scenarios, costs and policy implications. (Ministry of Social Development)
This project investigates the relationships between older people, working age people, communities and ”ageing in place” by focusing on the range of scenarios in which these intergenerational relationships are played out and change over time. This proposal complements, and builds upon, previous research that have identified costs and implications of formal/informal care of older people by working age people (see Koopman-Boyden et al. 2000; Davey and Keeling 2004; Davey et al. 2004).
Other Departments/Agencies involved: Housing New Zealand, Local Government New Zealand, Ministry of Health, Retirement commission, The Treasury, Centre for Housing Research Aotearoa New Zealand (CHRANZ).
The development phase of the longitudinal study of NZ children and families (Ministry of Social Development)
The purpose of the Development Phase is to build a sound platform from which to launch a new longitudinal study of New Zealand children and families. During the Development Phase, the successful proponent will be required to produce a detailed specification for the design of a new longitudinal study and a fully detailed project plan for the first two years of the study.
Other Departments/Agencies involved: Ministries of Social Development, Health, and Education, the Family Commission, The Treasury, the Health Research Council of New Zealand.
Pacific Volunteering (Ministry of Social Development)
This study seeks to explore Pacific peoples’ volunteering behaviour and the degree to which their cultural values and sense of obligation influence their participation in community-based voluntary activities.
Other Departments/Agencies involved: Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, Department of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Youth Development
Optimising multi-agency enforcement to reduce alcohol-related harm (Police)
The proposed research aims to provide increased knowledge about the effectiveness of multi-agency approaches to reducing the harm caused by intoxication and other risky drinking behaviours in licensed premises. It would evaluate the effectiveness of interventions applied by Police, local authorities, public health and other agencies involved in the regulatory control of licensed premises.
Other Departments/Agencies involved: Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, ACC, Ministry for Youth Development.
Researching the Potential for Linking Remote Sensing and other Spatial Land Information with Agricultural Production Data (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries/Statistics New Zealand)
The objective of the proposed project is to investigate the technical feasibility of linking Geospatial information (including Satellite Imagery) with information collected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) and Statistics NZ within the Agricultural Production Survey (APS). The project will determine whether the two data sources (Geospatial Information and the Agricultural Statistics frame) can be combined, how they might be combined, and identify additional information that can be derived by combining them.

Explaining the Dynamics and Motivations of Migration in New Zealand (Statistics New Zealand)
The primary objective of this project is to generate new knowledge on population movement by undertaking a national sample survey of around 15,000 households to identify recent mobility histories and reasons for moving or staying.

Longitudinal Research of Business Dynamics (Statistics New Zealand)
The two key objectives for this project are:
- Can a complete business data set with longitudinal depth be created based on linking existing survey and business administrative data, together with modelling?
- Conduct research that provides relevant information on business dynamics specifically relating to firm productivity growth, finance constraints, economic development and Research & Development investment decisions.
